Couple In Therapy

Couples Counselling

When we experience stress and trauma, the impacts are often felt in our closest relationships. We work with couples that are struggling to connect, communicate and manage conflict. Each person brings their own story and needs into relationship and we can help you to see and learn about each other with a new understanding. We have counsellors trained in the Gottman Method which is a well-known and researched backed approach to working with couples in relationships.

Couples Questions We Often Hear

The Gottman Method is an evidence-based approach to couples counselling developed by Drs. John and Julie Gottman after decades of studying what helps relationships succeed. Rather than simply talking about problems, the Gottman Method gives couples practical tools to improve communication, manage conflict more effectively, rebuild trust, and strengthen their emotional connection.

Not at all. While the Gottman Method can be very helpful for couples experiencing frequent conflict, communication difficulties, or recovering from challenges such as infidelity, it can also benefit couples who simply want to strengthen their relationship. Many couples seek counselling proactively to improve communication, navigate life transitions, or deepen their connection before problems become overwhelming.

The first few sessions focus on getting to know both partners and understanding the strengths and challenges within the relationship. Your therapist may ask questions about your relationship history, communication patterns, goals, and concerns. Some therapists also use the Gottman Relationship Checkup, an evidence-based assessment that helps identify areas to focus on during therapy.

From there, therapy is tailored to your relationship, helping you develop healthier communication, manage conflict, and strengthen your connection.

The Gottman Method teaches practical skills that couples can use both in and outside of therapy. Depending on your goals, your therapist may help you:

  • Improve communication and reduce misunderstandings.
  • Recognize and change unhelpful conflict patterns.
  • Learn healthier ways to repair disagreements.
  • Strengthen friendship, trust, and emotional intimacy.
  • Better understand each other’s needs, values, and experiences.
  • Respond more positively to each other’s attempts to connect.

The goal isn’t to eliminate conflict altogether, it’s to help couples manage conflict in healthier, more respectful ways.

No. Couples therapists work to understand both partners’ perspectives and create a safe, balanced space where each person feels heard. The goal isn’t to decide who is right or wrong but to help you understand one another more effectively and work together toward healthier patterns of communication and connection.

Every relationship is different, so there isn’t a set number of sessions. Some couples come for a short period to work through a specific concern, while others choose to continue for longer as they strengthen communication and work toward shared goals. Your therapist will work with you to develop a plan that meets your needs.

Couples counselling may be helpful if you’re experiencing:

  • Frequent arguments or communication difficulties.
  • Feeling disconnected or emotionally distant.
  • Ongoing conflict that never seems to get resolved.
  • Challenges following a major life transition, such as becoming parents.
  • Difficulty rebuilding trust.
  • A desire to strengthen an already healthy relationship.

You don’t have to wait until your relationship is in crisis to benefit from counselling.
