• I was born in Bathurst, N.B. and lived in Fredericton and Montreal for school before settling down on the Kingston Peninsula.

• I am a dog mom to a two-year-old golden retriever named Em.

• I had 9 roommates all throughout my undergraduate degree.

• I worked in arts education prior to starting my Masters in Art Therapy.

• In my free time I enjoy playing guitar, cooking, making art, or spending time outdoors (especially on the water!)

• It is not uncommon to see me with paint on my skin, clothes, hair, etc.

• My favourite colour is yellow because it reminds me of the sun

Art therapy may be what you're looking for!

🎨 Art therapy is the intentional integration of art materials in the therapeutic process.

🎨 You will work with a trained art therapist who is versed in both counselling theories and art-making.

🎨 The trained art therapist will come up with activities and directives to compliment the client’s individual healing journey, as well as offer periods of free exploration and creation.

🎨 A discussion period often follows art making where the client and therapist explore the art and what it means to the client.

🎨 No prior experience with art making is required to have a productive and meaningful experience in art therapy.

A childhood immigrant from his native Scotland, David has spent a lifetime working alongside some of the most talented leaders across the Canadian landscape. David has served as a street involved Pastor in Toronto and London. His major focuses of ministry were related to social outreach, restorative justice, and learning to wrestle with life and faith in the rapidly evolving social media age.

As someone working to heal from traumatic stress injuries from childhood, David's diagnosis with Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in 2018 led him to become a public advocate for the de-stigmatization of mental health and addiction issues (especially when related to generational trauma). He quickly learned the challenges and opportunities this presents, as he himself is one of the examples. Redemptive Trauma: Confession of a Defrocked Priest is a memoir embracing hard truths of trauma to help others heal their own. Today, David serves as a mental health professional with the Canadian Mental Health Association in Rapid Access Addiction Medicine; and has just begun work as a 9-1-1 Mobile Crisis Responder with the Toronto Community Crisis Service.

Affirmations and mantras work really well if they are 𝘧𝘦𝘭𝘵 rather than 𝘴𝘢𝘪𝘥 so I would encourage people to choose a feeling that they want to expand on and use that as their mantra or affirmation.

For example, someone who wants to feel confident could imagine how confidence feels, what it would look, and how they would act.

Connection through therapy is extremely important to me, as I have experienced my own healing journey as a client through the relationship and trust with my own therapist. Jason Jones, one of our wonderful Rising Tides counsellors, has shared a few phrases that may help:

💬 I am feeling really upset right now, and I need a timeout to process before I say hurtful things.
💬 I am not thinking right about this right now, and I just need some space to let the thoughts and feelings subside.
💬 I think we are being very emotional about this right now and nothing good will come out of this talk right now.

Sometimes it's a good idea to step away from a heated argument and take time to process what you are angry about and then return to the conversation when you are feeling more calm.

🌸🌸 What are some steps that you have witnessed a client take to improve their mental health on their own? 🌸🌸

One of the things that I promote the most for self-care between sessions is rest and compassion. Going to therapy can be hard work and it’s important to remember that making life long changes will require patience and persistence. While learning coping skills should be practiced in between therapy sessions, it’s more important for me that my clients notice when they should be doing something to help themselves. When a client is feeling triggered, overwhelmed, exhausted or irritable – these are opportunities to care for oneself in a loving and kind way. Self care can look a little bit different for everyone so there is no formula that will work every time but it is important that clients know when it’s time to turn inwards and take care of themselves for a little while.

🌸🌸 What are some steps that you have witnessed a client take to improve their mental health on their own? 🌸🌸

While many people require the support of a counsellor or mental health professional to improve their mental health, there are many things that clients can do on their own to take steps towards their own healing. Some of the things I have personally witnessed is clients who initiate a new hobby or activity. Just changing up your daily routine can be so helpful to someone who is struggling with their mental wellness. I have heard from many clients who have joined workout programs, running clubs, book clubs, yoga classes, etc. and were pleased to discover a new enjoyable activity and social connection with other participants. Many of my clients have also been pleased to discover a connection to mindfulness or relaxation apps that can help with grounding or bedtime routines to promote sleep. Most of the work of improving mental health actually happens outside of the therapy office when clients have a chance to make changes in their daily life routines.
